Spanish Immersion: Chile & Argentina
Summer 2012

Spanish immersion in Chile and Argentina is a two-week immersion trip with a day-trip to Uruguay.  The purpose of our trip is to provide a language and cultural immersion for our Spanish students.    Students will be exposed to Latin American culture and the Spanish language on each day of this voyage.  Students will live with families in Chile and attend school.  We will communicate in all instances in Spanish; at mealtimes, at school, in all parts of daily life.  In Argentina, and for our day trip to Uruguay, students will experience cultural and language immersion by touring in the target language at museums, at an Argentinean ranch called “una estancia” and while visiting the Spanish, British and Portuguese colonial city and region of Colonia, Uruguay.  Further immersion will be experienced while exploring Buenos Aires, ordering at restaurants, shopping and simply “getting around.”  Students will become global citizens through the exposure to three Spanish-speaking countries with differing idioms, foods, currencies, governments, public transportation systems and political viewpoints.  Our purpose is for students to pursue true fluency in another language and facilitate a greater understanding of the world for future travel.

Biology in Brazil

Summer 2012

Biology in Brazil is a two-week science immersion trip. As volunteers with Earthwatch Institute, students will work closely with scientists from the Jaguar Conservation Fund to collect critical environmental data that aims to determine the population and conservation status of five key species along the Araguaia River corridor: jaguar, giant river otter, giant Piraíba catfish, Amazon River dolphin, and black caiman. Students will also become more responsible global citizens as they learn about the threat of habitat fragmentation to biodiversity worldwide. Fieldwork may include setting up and checking camera traps, walking transects with dogs trained to detect jaguar scat, and radio-tracking collared or tagged animals. Students will stay in a private house within Emas National Park with flush toilets, electricity, hot water and showers. The trip is open to students who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors during the 2011-12 school year. The price of the trip ($5,900) covers all meals, accommodations, roundtrip airfare, tourist visa, on-site travel, emergency medical/evacuation insurance, 24-hour emergency service, the guidance of experienced field scientists and Earthwatch staff, and all costs of field research.
