History

The Legacy of Nano Nagle (1718 – 1776)
Nano Nagle, foundress of the Sisters of the Presentation, defied oppressive laws to educate Ireland’s poor. By 1776, she had opened seven schools in Cork and established the Sisters of the Presentation to continue her mission. Her legacy of faith and education empowered generations to break the cycle of poverty.
Expanding Nano’s Mission (1854)
The Sisters of the Presentation expanded Nano’s mission worldwide, founding schools that provided transformative Catholic education.
In 1854, the Presentation Sisters arrived in San Francisco to meet the growing need for Catholic education. Their dedication played a pivotal role in establishing faith-based learning in California.

Presentation High School in San Jose (1962)
In 1962, the Sisters of the Presentation founded Presentation High School in San Jose, continuing Nano Nagle’s legacy of education rooted in faith, justice, and service. The Sisters also staffed many Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese, ensuring a strong foundation of Catholic education in the region.
Honoring Our Mission Today
Guided by the teachings of Jesus Christ and the Charism of Nano Nagle, Presentation High School remains dedicated to empowering young women to lead lives of faith, compassion, and service.
In collaboration with international Presentation organizations, we are committed to caring for the whole of creation through environmental stewardship, challenging unjust structures for those oppressed and made poor, and advocating for the global rights of women, children, and indigenous peoples. We are devoted to living a contemplative faith grounded in Gospel values, cultivating a welcoming heart to honor the dignity of all people, and nurturing relationships in community through compassion and love.
Presentation students proudly live out our motto: “Not Words, But Deeds.”
